Artist Statement
I am most interested in executing ideas with a team.
I love the feeling of trying to bring out the very best in other creative people. I find I do this most effectively by coming up with ideas, inviting others to create with me and then directing my vision. The collaborative process brings an energy to everyone involved that I find inspires me to look harder.
For My Identiy Series, I am showing a Model in a tight white tube dress laying on her back on a pink and white zig zag rug. Her left arm is out to her side and the pink and white pattern of the rug has been painted on her so it looks like she is part of the rug. An Artist’s hand holds a paint brush and is working on painting her arm up towards her shoulder. She will ultimately look like she becomes part of the floor. The painting continues with an artist on either side of the model, completing the 3d pattern in pink and white, around her arms and hands. She sits up right and is very still with a blanket on her legs. I want to show another aspect of this work, that this can be an arduous process, to execute a creative vision and often we don’t get to appreciate or see what it takes to pull things like this off.
The ultimate outcome is to be that the model is simply part of the floor or a wall, simply a decoration, part of the inanimate. Then we will see her against the white backdrop with a distinct identity, a unique pattern. She is peeled off of this rug into an individual. This whole process had everyone involved engaged in the artistic process and in the statement we are making. She is free. Now we see an individual who stands out against a white backdrop. Independent of the pattern that held her identity.
My style tends to be somewhat editorial as I love the theatrical look of this kind of photography and it lends itself to having a team of people to create different looks. I like using vibrant colors, costumes, makeup, wigs. I also like to use different kinds of people. A professional model to asking a person that works at my dentists office to do a project. I like my Art to be a playful and fun experience. I also like to show people I am working with an objective view of themselves. The best way to do that is in pictures.
I use a Canon 6D DSLR camera, strobe lights and reflectors, and various back drops.
